You can install fonts on your Windows machine and make them available to your Office programs. By using unique fonts you can give an extra edge to your presentations, make a professional looking report or just show them off to your colleagues.

You can download fonts from the internet. Font libraries are also available on CD’s. If you are downloading fonts or are purchasing a font CD, make sure that the fonts are supported by Windows; otherwise the fonts may not be recognized by Windows. Windows supports many type of fonts, like the TrueType fonts (TTF, .ttf), OpenType fonts (OTF, .otf), and Type 1 fonts (PFM, .pfm).

Steps to install Fonts on a Windows machine…
Fonts downloaded from Web Sites are usually shipped as a .zip file. You will need to unzip the .zip file before you add those fonts to your computer. To unzip a file, right-click it and select the Extract All option in the pop-up menu.
It is recommended to close all programs before installing the new fonts.

  1. Click the Start button and select Control Panel. The Control Panel window will now be launched.
  2. Click the Appearance and Personalization link and select Fonts. The Fonts window will now be launched.
Note: If you are using Classic View, then click the Fonts option in the Control Panel window.
  3. Click the File menu and select the Install new font… option.
Note: The File menu may be hidden if you are using Windows Vista, to view the File menu click the Organize button, go to Layout option and select the Menu option (if unchecked). The File menu will now be displayed.
  4. In the Folders list navigate to the folder that contains the fonts to be added.
Note: If you are adding fonts from a CD then click the Drives drop-down and select the letter for your CD/DVD drive.
  5. In the List of Fonts, select the font(s) that you want to install.

  6. Click the OK/Install button to install the fonts. You can close the Fonts window.

That’s It! Your font is now installed. Now, when you start Word, the newly installed font will appear in the Font list.

Please note that the new font will be available only on the machine on which it is installed. If you view your document on another machine, on which the font is not installed then by default the document will be displayed in Times Roman.
